Prescriptions and pharmacy choice

How a prescription is decided, where it goes, and what you control.

Two things are true of every prescription written at this practice: the prescriber chooses the medication, and the patient chooses the pharmacy.

Your physician evaluates you.

Care begins with a clinical evaluation — your history, your current medications, your allergies, and what you are actually experiencing.

The prescriber chooses the medication.

If medication is appropriate, your physician selects it using independent clinical judgment. That choice is the physician's, informed by your history and by drug–drug and drug–allergy checks. It is never made by software and never directed by a pharmacy or a manufacturer.

You choose the pharmacy.

You tell us where you want the prescription filled — any retail or mail-order pharmacy you prefer. We do not steer you to a particular pharmacy, and we have no financial relationship that depends on where you fill.

The prescription is transmitted electronically.

The prescription is sent through a certified electronic prescribing network to the pharmacy you named. Electronic transmission reduces transcription error and lets the pharmacy begin work before you arrive.

Renewals and changes.

Your pharmacy can send renewal requests and change requests back to your physician through the same network, and your physician responds to each one.

Safety checks that run every time

  • Drug–drug interaction checking against your active medication list.
  • Drug–allergy checking against your documented allergies.
  • For controlled substances, the applicable state prescription drug monitoring program is consulted as required by law.
  • Identity of the prescriber is verified, and controlled-substance prescriptions are signed with two-factor authentication.

Pharmacy connectivity

Prescriptions are routed over a certified national e-prescribing network that connects to retail, mail-order, and specialty pharmacies across the United States, including compounding pharmacies where a compounded formulation is clinically appropriate.

We maintain no ownership interest in any pharmacy and accept no payment from any pharmacy or pharmaceutical manufacturer for choosing a medication or a pharmacy.
